Since Shanti joined NREL in 2000, he has worked with the Commercial Building Research Group with a focus on applied research and design processes for net-zero energy commercial buildings. He is currently leading the development of the next round of Advanced Energy Design Guides and managing the Whole Buildings Systems Integration section in the NREL Commercial Buildings Research Group. His recent research has focused on developing an energy performance based design building process for net-zero energy buildings, including documenting best practices for controlling capital costs while reaching net-zero energy goals, and is a recent recipient of a First Place 2013 ASHRAE Technology Award for his applied research in design and operation of NREL’s large scale net zero energy Research Support Facility.
Tom Hootman is an architect and author with an expertise in innovative sustainable design. Tom possesses strong design and technical skills and is an effective integrator of holistic sustainable design solutions. He has worked on a wide variety of high performance building projects at variety of scales from interiors-to buildings-to cities. One of Tom’s specialties is the design of net zero energy buildings and communities. He has worked on several net zero energy buildings, campuses and communities including the National Renewable Energy Laboratory’s Research Support Facility. Tom’s new book, “Net Zero Energy Design: A Guide for Commercial Architecture”, published by Wiley in October of 2012, allows him to continue to share his knowledge on net zero energy buildings. Tom is distinguished with active leadership in the community and industry. He has over a decade of volunteer service to AIA COTE and USGBC. He regularly writes and speaks on a variety green building issues at local, national and international venues. Over the last five years Tom has delivered over 50 presentations including several important national and regional conferences for USGBC, ULI and AIA. Tom is a passionate advocate for sustainability and always seeking to inspire others and lead by example.
